Hardware Specialist

We are seeking an electrical engineering candidate with a strong background in low power, low noise analog circuit design for developing next-generation body worn sensor technologies. The candidate will be working with the hardware development team and directly with senior management to evolve the existing product platform to capture new market spaces and to translate advanced research ideas into commercial products. A cross disciplinary approach to engineering is fundamental, as interfacing with skin-contact electrode materials is key, as well as working with multi-sensing modalities, such as inertial measurement units, force sensing, and pressure distribution technologies. Candidates must have a proven track record of solving multi-disciplinary challenges and must exhibit a strong passion for engineering. The position will require exploratory activities to inform research projects, as well as delivering mission-critical projects for ongoing manufacturing efforts. Candidates will be involved with the full product life cycle, from requirement definition, to design and development efforts, verification and validation activities and final product release.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead research in developing prototype sensor and monitoring hardware
  • Lead data gathering experiments to evaluate and improve technology
  • Perform senior-level design activities for prototyping and developing research ideas into commercial products
  • Organize and perform pilot studies for developing body sensor concepts for research proposals
  • Design and build custom hardware for internal research studies

Required Qualifications

  • Have experience in designating low noise, mixed-signal circuit schematics
  • Have experience in PCB layout.
  • Debug mixed-signal circuit board assemblies using schematic and layout information

Software Engineer

We are seeking an ambitious Software Engineer to join our focused Product Development Team to help manage and develop our signal acquisition and processing software platforms, running on PC and Mobile Devices.  As a member of our team, candidates will have the opportunity to make impactful contributions working directly with senior management to advance body-worn sensor technology.  Applicants will be exposed to all elements of the software platform, and must be willing to learn about hardware interfacing strategies and signal processing.

The engineer will be learning and working with tools such as National Instruments DAQ-MX and VISA, DirectX, Open GL and may occasionally work with command-line programming. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate an aptitude for managing complex projects and have an ability to solve problems independently.

Signal Processing Engineers

We are seeking a candidate to assist with the development of algorithms for processing muscle activation and body motion signals acquired during various human movements. The algorithms require knowledge of signal processing, decision theory, pattern recognition and machine learning primarily in a MATLAB environment.

The candidate  will join a dynamic and growing team and will work directly to gain relevant technical and scientific expertise, as well as professional development. The candidate will be able to interact directly with other R&D and software development teams . The  R&D Lab also maintains close collaborations with researchers from surrounding universities in Massachusetts.

Primary Responsibilities

Work with Delsys Research staff to design and implement algorithms for processing neuromuscular and biomotion signals acquired from healthy and patient populations during various human movements including exercise, gait, daily living activities, and speech.

Required Qualifications
The candidate must:

Administrative Assistant

We are seeking an Administrative professional to provide assistance to approximately 10 scientists and students working in our research division where new sensor technology is being developed and used to study human movement for applications in neurology, physical rehabilitation, sports, and prosthetics. The Research Administrative Assistant reports to the Director of Research.

Primary Responsibilities

  • This person will be tasked with organizing and maintaining daily administrative operations including:
  • Drafting, editing and distributing external and internal communications
  • General clerical duties including photocopying, faxing and filing
  • Organizing and scheduling meetings and appointments
  • Arranging travel, workshop, and conference planning
  • Scheduling study subject participation
  • Maintaining subject data base
  • Providing general support to visitors

Internships and Co-Ops

Internships opportunities and Co-Ops will be available in 2017 for engineering students and graduate students interested in gaining meaningful experience in the research, development and support of wearable sensor technologies for investigating human movement.

Interns will be working with experienced scientists, hardware and software engineers on algorithm development, signal processing, hardware design and software development.

Internships occur in the summer (May –August). Co-ops are half-year commitments (typically January – June or July – December).

Applicants accepted for internships and co-ops will be paid on an hourly basis and will work in our Massachusetts head office (23 Strathmore Road Natick MA 01760).

Currently enrolled college students must have completed at least one year of study. International students must be eligible to work legally in the U.S. (Note: Delsys does not sponsor working visas for internships or co-ops). Students must secure their own housing and transportation during their stay.

R&D Intern in Machine Learning

We are seeking an individual for summer 2017 to develop novel activity monitoring algorithms for the tracking of neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Parkinson’s disease). The project involves detecting the presence and severity of involuntary motor symptoms from EMG/IMU signals collected by sensors worn by Parkinson’s patients during normal daily activities in a home-like environment. The goal of the project is to use dynamic machine learning algorithms to correctly classify the involuntary motor symptoms detected by an expert clinician.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work with Research staff to design an algorithm architecture for monitoring quality of movement.
  • Analyze signals to extract key features for discriminating healthy form symptomatic movement.
  • Design, train and test algorithms for detecting the incidence and severity of movement disorders.

The candidate will be working with the hardware development team and directly with senior management to help test a new product platform and develop several manufacturing test fixtures for this family of devices.  Additionally, the student will support hardware activities needed for ongoing research products which aim to evolve sensor technologies and their applications.  The candidate will be exposed to cross disciplinary approaches in engineering which will include working directly with mechanical design, interfacing with the software team and assisting with material testing and prototype development.  Candidates must demonstrate an affinity for analytical thinking and pragmatic problem-solving, and will be expected to perform hand’s-on bench-work as well as contribute to documentation.  Candidates will be exposed to various elements of the product life cycle and will be working with other engineers on time-sensitive and mission-critical projects. R&D Intern in Signal Processing

We are seeking an individual for summer 2017 to analyze and process signals for speech recognition. The project is part of a collaborative effort across a multi-disciplinary team of speech processing experts, clinicians, and engineers that aims to develop a prosthetic worn on the face that will enable people without vocal speech (laryngectomy users) to communicate via sub-vocal speech (mouthing words). The project involves analysis of EMG, IMU and other sensor signals that are recorded from muscles of the face and neck during mouthed speech to monitor the quality of the mouthed words, detect the start and end states of speech and extract discriminable features for building phoneme-based speech recognition models.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work with Research staff to process EMG, IMU and other sensor signals to develop automated algorithms for monitoring signal quality and extracting features for speech analysis.
  • Identify subject-specific parameters for amplitude and temporal characteristics of mouthed speech.
  • Develop finite state machines for automatic detection and segmentation of start and end of speech.
  • Evaluate discriminable features for phoneme-based speech recognition algorithms.
